Bypass Pumping > Water Cooling System for Rouge Steel

Water Cooling Bypass SystemWater Cooling Bypass Project 2

Rouge Steel utilized the neighboring Rouge River for cooling their process systems. Due to the decreasing water table elevations in recent years, the water temperature in the cooling system had increased a few degrees to reach a dangerous level and risk an explosion in the steel mill.

MERSINO was brought in to evaluate the possibility of pumping water out of the river and discharging into a chiller tower that returned the water to the channel. MERSINO provided a quotation that included an arsenal of 18-inch, 12-inch, and 8-inch centrifugal pumps, ultimately combining to provide a total flow of approximately 100,000 gallons per minute.

The client was concerned about the diesel usage as well as space restrictions, requesting instead nine 18-inch electric drive centrifugal pumps. MERSINO informed the client that these pumps were not readily available in the fleet, but could be manufactured by our sister company, Global Pump Company. The client was receptive but required that the pumps be delivered in three weeks, as the summer was approaching.

Global Pump Company and MERSINO manufactured and
delivered nine 18-inch electric drive pumps ahead of schedule. The pumps provided the desired capacity to control temperatures for the length of the summer. Due to the success of the project, MERSINO was hired to provide the services again the following summer, after which time permanent vertical turbines were manufactured and installed.
