Safety Starts Within: A Week of Health and Awareness

What is your first thought when thinking of workplace safety–Hard hats? Steel-toe boots? Gloves? Although all these things are crucial to staying safe, here at Mersino we are challenged to dive deeper. At Mersino, safety relates to aspects that are far more complex than simple physical well-being—it starts with awareness. Through our ‘Safety Week’ program, we promote awareness across multiple dimensions of overall well-being.

Diving Deeper into Safety Week

Each day of the week, our Director of Health & Safety shares a reading on a different safety-related topic. There were 5 different focuses which highlighted the importance of mental and physical health:

  • Stretching and body preparation
  • A healthy diet
  • Importance of heart health
  • Body ergonomics
  • Mental health

When these readings are sent each morning, everyone can participate in completing a coordinating quiz based on the topic of the day. Scores are tracked, and the employees with the highest scores are awarded a year-long Planet Fitness gym membership or Ray-Bans! Aside from individual scores being tracked, branch scores also get tracked - Whichever branch has the highest score wins a new grill/smoker! This friendly competition was a great way to get everyone involved and interested in these topics that are vital to a healthy lifestyle.

Tour de Cure

With physical and mental health in mind, we also actively participated in a fundraiser held by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). During the week, employees could purchase a Mersino x ADA branded shirt, where all profits went straight to the organization. If employees opted out of purchasing a shirt, they also had the option to make a monetary donation. By the end of the week, we had raised over $5,000 for the ADA – an incredible show of generosity and community spirit. The week ended with the Tour de Cure cycling event that was made to help raise awareness and donations to the cause. We had one rider from our corporate office participating in the 33-mile race, representing Mersino and the focus we put on physical health and well-being.

Safety Week Focuses

  • Mental Health Importance: Mental health is arguably one of the most important roles in safety. Ensuring you are taking care of your mind, and checking up on others’ well-being, ultimately saves lives.
  • Awareness Significance: Awareness prevents accidents before they happen, encourages safer decision-making, promotes a strong safety culture, reduces injuries and fatalities, and is ultimately essential in high-risk jobsites.
  • Mersino’s Goal: Mersino’s goal behind Safety Week is to promote the well-being of our employees, as well as fundraise for the American Diabetes Association to help support the fight for a cure.

Participating in safety week is more than just readings and checklists - it's a cornerstone of our values. It combines education, teamwork, fun, and purpose to build a safer workplace for all. If you want to see more on how Mersino demonstrates safety, visit our case studies section.
